My kids didn’t always live on hot dogs and hambuger helper. I used to be able to pull together a fairly healthy diet but in the last 3 years, I have just given up and not really cared what we ate. I suppose 2 of the reasons are that I developed a wheat allergy (which resulted in frustration in planning menus) and that my oldest son was diagnosed with autism (struggling to overcome depression on my part).
Eating like this makes us all feel *horrible* which creates a vicious cycle where we feel awful and don’t want to cook so we fix boxed food……and on it goes. It stops today.
The younger kids, dh and I went to Sam’s last night and stocked up on healthy food. We came home with:
-
- juice (grape, apple, and cranberry, lemon. If the kids drink juice, it’s always watered down.)
- cheese (4 different types of cheese plus cottage cheese and string cheese)
- honey (I prefer local honey but I can never get ahold of our local beekeeper)
- lots of fruit (strawberries, kiwi, oranges, red grapes, aprium, bananas)
- lots of vegetables (portabella mushrooms, salad mix, tomatoes, carrots, avocados, onions, peppers, potatoes, romaine, and cucumbers)
- eggs
- peanut butter
Our total came to $180 which I hope isn’t too bad for a family of seven and I do hope it lasts longer than a week–with 3 teenage boys, though, that may be wishful thinking.
After we got home from the movies (we took the younger kids to “Meet the Robinsons”–bizarre movie), dh and I stayed up and ‘processed’ some of the produce. We washed, seeded, and sliced the peppers, washed and sliced the strawberries, sliced some of the cheese, and put the rest of the groceries away. Today, I will have 2 of the kids peel and cut the 10# of carrots (which I *know* will not last 2 weeks) and I”ll slice 1/2 of the tomatoes.
Our healthy eating started this morning. I had some Brown Cow Whole Milk Plain Yogurt in the refrigerator so I made parfaits for all of us this morning. I took the plain yogurt and layered it in glasses with the sliced strawberries and diced kiwi. The fruit was sprinkled with a little sugar. We had very few complaints this morning and all I can say is, “Thank you, Lord!!” I would have had pictures of our parfaits all lined up on the counter but *someone* who will remain nameless swiped the rechargable batteries from the camera to power his CD player….off to find those batteries! LOL!
